case-control studies admit several possible sources of bias. One of them is called recall bias: although Doll and Hill ensured that the interviewers didn’t know the diagnoses, the patients certainly knew whether they had cancer or not. This could have affected their recollections. Another problem is selection bias. Hospitalized cancer patients were in no way a representative sample of the population, or even of the smoking population.
