In this respect he was already more sophisticated than many people today, who choose a fad diet (for example) just because a friend went on that diet and lost weight. If you choose a diet based only on one friend’s experience, you are essentially saying that you believe you are similar to your friend in all relevant details: age, heredity, home environment, previous diet, and so forth. That is a lot to assume.
