RCTs are considered the “gold standard” of causal effect estimation for exactly the same reason. Because front-door estimates do the same thing, with the additional virtue of observing people’s behavior in their own natural habitat instead of a laboratory, I would not be surprised if this method eventually becomes a useful alternative to randomized controlled trials.
