As a first step toward alleviating secularism’s chronic shortage of supporters, let’s advance a big-tent definition of what it means to be a secularist: A secularist may be a believer or a nonbeliever, secular and/or secularish, but always someone who rejects religious establishment. She or he maintains that a good society is one whose government permits its citizens the maximal possible degree of freedom of religion and freedom from religion while maintaining order.
