It reminded me of the egg, carrot and coffee bean story, which I had read, and which has recently been doing the rounds on social media as a video. When a young daughter complained about how hard her life was and how she had many problems, her mother took her to the kitchen and handed her an egg, a carrot and a coffee bean. She placed three boiling pots of water on the stove and asked her daughter to drop the egg, the carrot and the coffee bean into each of them.
After about fifteen minutes of boiling, the carrot, which was hard to begin with, came out soft and squishy. The egg, fragile to begin with, became hard-boiled. It was only the ground coffee bean which was unique. It retained its original form, yet gave out something useful – coffee. It didn’t itself change, but it changed the water it had been dropped into. The mother asked the daughter which one she would like to be when adversity struck – a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean.
It made me think how different they are from adults. They are not afraid to imagine and they are not afraid to share their dreams. They are not afraid to fall down and if they do, they just get up and carry on with life. It made me wonder why we adults do not have the enthusiasm that children do, to try out new things. Why are we so enclosed in our comfort zones, so reluctant to step out? I think there are many reasons for it.
