It reminded me of the egg, carrot and coffee bean story, which I had read, and which has recently been doing the rounds on social media as a video. When a young daughter complained about how hard her life was and how she had many problems, her mother took her to the kitchen and handed her an egg, a carrot and a coffee bean. She placed three boiling pots of water on the stove and asked her daughter to drop the egg, the carrot and the coffee bean into each of them.

After about fifteen minutes of boiling, the carrot, which was hard to begin with, came out soft and squishy. The egg, fragile to begin with, became hard-boiled. It was only the ground coffee bean which was unique. It retained its original form, yet gave out something useful – coffee. It didn’t itself change, but it changed the water it had been dropped into. The mother asked the daughter which one she would like to be when adversity struck – a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean.

Science has proven that laughter strengthens our immune system, helps us fight illnesses and reduces problems associated with diseases such as high blood pressure, strokes, arthritis and ulcers. There are more than six thousand laughter yoga clubs in sixty countries. Some of these laughter clubs that have sprouted across my neighbourhood first shocked me. Initially, I was startled by the noise. A group of ...more
