Many Christians had encouraged me to use the term same-sex attracted to distance myself from the gay world, but somehow this just didn’t work when I spoke to people outside Christian circles. Others said, “Don’t call yourself gay! You’re making your sexuality your identity.” Such a statement, while seemingly caring, dismissed the nuanced reality of my story. There was something in our shared reality of living with these desires and bodily differences that contained a shared history, a common experience.
