Millions of GeoCities homepages were created, often by individuals, with most being nothing more than simple personal pages with variations of a “Hello World” message. Similar plug-and-play homepage hosts sprang up called Tripod and Angelfire, both allowing users to express themselves directly by producing rudimentary “profiles.” GeoCities and the like were “social media,” or at least, an early form of it.
