The close of the twentieth century brought about many changes in the American church and race relations, changes that may have resulted in violence had they happened in earlier generations. The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the nation’s largest Protestant denomination that had been founded to protect slaveholders within its ranks, finally apologized for its racist roots.
