Whatever the reason for the disparity, the sad result is that rates of arrest are not the same across racial groups in the United States. Blacks are re-arrested more often than whites. The algorithm is judging them not on the colour of their skin, but on the all-too-predictable consequences of America’s historically deeply unbalanced society. Until all groups are arrested at the same rate, this kind of bias is a mathematical certainty.
