In Germany, where “Heil Hitler” is expected of everybody, greetings are significant and revealing. If a Nazi says “Heil Hitler” to a non-Nazi, the latter may reply with the old Austrian “Grow Gott” (literally, “Greet God”) and still be safe from arrest.
