A choir of nine-or ten-year-old pupils sang pop songs by the likes of Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey; two lads of the same age played piano; some others, slightly older, perhaps twelve or thirteen, performed a rap. After each performance the church erupted into exuberant applause. It was like an audition for American Idol.
