‘Here now, at this minute, your fear and my fear are part of heaven, where there will be no fear any more for ever.’

It was too easy to die for what was good or beautiful, for home or children or a civilization—it needed a God to die for the half-hearted and the corrupt.

That was the fallacy of the death-bed repentance—penitence was the fruit of long training and discipline: fear wasn’t enough.
