Here’s what they say: Physical things have a location. You can say where your house is. They have size, mass, and shape—the properties of material things. Then the dualists ask, “What is the size of an emotion, the shape of a memory, or the mass of your dreams?” Consciousness, they argue, doesn’t have the properties of material things, therefore it is not a material thing.
