You are cured once you see alcohol for what it is: a poison that does nothing whatsoever for anyone. After all, if it does something for so-called ‘normal drinkers’, shouldn’t it follow that it does a lot more for someone who drinks a lot more of it. If it really did bestow some sort of crutch or pleasure on ‘normal’ drinkers, then surely alcoholics would be the happiest, most confident and secure people on the planet! And by the same token, since it does in fact make alcoholics miserable and terrified, doesn’t it also follow that it must make ‘normal’ drinkers sad and fearful?
What causes us to go on craving? Is it the incredibly powerful addictive effect of the drug? No, it is ignorance: the belief that we are making a genuine sacrifice, that social occasions will never be enjoyable without alcohol, or that we won’t be able to cope with stress without it; and the belief that we can never be completely free. Once a
