The study controlled for dozens of other potentially determining factors: What if already-sexist cultures chose the plough? Does religion have as great an effect as the plough? And so on. But a thorough regression analysis led them to rule out these other potential factors and to conclude that, in fact, it was the plough itself that did women in, by creating conditions of female oppression.
