Melanie Mitchell is a professor of computer science who has worked at the Santa Fe Institute which is the world's leading centre for complexity research. In 2009, Mitchell wrote a book entitled Complexity: A Guided Tour which is an introduction and overview of complexity. Chapter Two of that book provides a clear explanation of nonlinearity.
