Was that one of those things where you said something really vulnerable to make yourself seem above it all? Had he said virginity louder than any of the other words in that sentence? Was he talking about her virginity?
As a greeting, she sat down and casually put her bare foot on the table and examined it for a moment.

“Oh my God.” Janelle drew a hand over her face. “Seriously, Nate. You have to like something. You can’t go around being miserable about everything.”
For no reason Stevie could determine, Ellie put her foot in David’s face, and he bit it. She screamed with laughter.

(Stevie didn’t buy white T-shirts. Their shelf life was too short.)

Stevie couldn’t feel guilty for her thoughts and she couldn’t engage with all of her thoughts. That was something they taught you in anxiety therapy—the thoughts may come, but you don’t have to chase them all. It was sort of the opposite of good detective work, in which you had to follow every lead.
