I’m done making everyone else happy. It’s time for me to enjoy life a little.
When the people you love hate the person you choose, it’s like being torn in half.
“Oh, I owe you now?” “I did fall head over heels for you . . . into a pool.”
“Don’t be anyone else but who you are, Kristin. There’s nothing sexier than a woman who’s confident. Trust me.”
“But I won’t lie, I’m attracted to you, and if all we’ll ever be is friends . . . I’m okay with that.”
“Tell me you don’t feel anything.” I give her a chance out of this. I’ll let her go if she says the words. “Tell me to stop coming around and that you’re not interested.” “I can’t . . .”
“I’m going to win your heart, Kristin. Be ready.”
“You’re the first man in a long time to make me feel pretty.”
“You aren’t the only one scared here. Trust me, I’m not sure what to think half the time. But I can promise you this”—he pushes forward so our hands are now joined—“I will never make you feel small. You won’t ever be lonely, Kristin. I promise you that, if you give this a chance, I will treat you like you should’ve been treated all along.”
“Maybe you’re right. Maybe neither of us needs any more complications, but you’re the only thing I want.”
“I want nothing more than to bring your lips to mine. I want to kiss every inch of you, make you forget everything except me, and then make love to you until we collapse. You don’t have to guilt me, you just have to say the word, and I’m right here.”
The smile you say you love is there because of you. The laugh you hear, only started when you came around. I was drifting for so long, afraid to grab on to something because nothing was sturdy enough. I don’t know if you’ll be what tethers me, but right now, I know that I want to find out.”
“You’re nothing that he says you are. You are the woman who tucks those kids in at night, encourages them, and has a mock concert in the living room to cheer them up.” I brush my thumb against her palm. “You’re so much more than he ever saw, sweetheart.”
“You’re more than just one night for me, Noah. You’re the whole damn thing, and that scares me. I don’t want to be scared anymore.”
“It’s never too soon when it’s right. I know how hard it is to take chances after you’ve been hurt, but take them.
Aubrey walks over and throws her arms around my neck. “Thank you for the cookies. I like you.” She kisses my cheek, and I’m toast. This little girl just stole my heart. Seems that this girl is more like her mother than I first thought.
