The most sustainable employer benefits have historically been squeezed out of companies by their workers, typically through the activity of trade unions. Benevolent companies, where kind-hearted bosses shower perks on their staff like confetti, have existed as long as capitalism itself. Yet this is comparable perhaps to life under a benevolent dictator: a usurper might just as easily come along and sweep everything away.
