For the overly independent self, dependence is in the shadows, along with the bare vulnerability of taking oneself to be a solo agent in the face of overwhelmingly vast and mysterious forces. Here we cling not to our wanting to be taken care of but to our separateness, associating going beyond it with danger, with losing our sense of self. Destiny here isn’t preset.
