Beth is wearing a shirt that says NEVER TRUST AN ATOM. THEY MAKE UP EVERYTHING, and she is focused on the paper in her lap, which she’s been folding for the past thirty minutes.

Jesús makes a double dry espresso and hands it to the person in the car. He asks the driver, “Is this world just a mirage?” I hear her respond, “Well . . . we are in the desert.”

“There is always another way, or the universe wouldn’t have created a right and left side.” I’ve never met anyone more confusing and brilliant at the same time.

Beth is wearing another doozy of a T-shirt today that says #HASHTAGSSUCK.

I ask Beth why she doesn’t trust him. “He’s too perfect,” she says. “Everyone has flaws. He works too hard to hide his.”
