said, "Life is never as it seems, Lela. When one star dims and disappears, another is born to replace it.
If it were possible, Sage would’ve sworn she heard his heart break.
So he’d run away from home on a fool’s journey, seeking answers afar when they were found much closer to home. Within myself.
Love is the birth of all. My heart to your soul. The beginning but never the end.”
I'll see you again where stars shine and love is the brightest one of them all."
“The moon is my faith, my light through the darkness life can often become. The sun is my purpose, the warmth that heats my heart and fuels my soul, born the day you cried your way into my world. And the single star, truth, helps me find my way home when I’m lost and lonely. Your father is the brightest star in my cosmos.”
Lela gasped. The violent gulping of air burned her lungs, thick and toxic. Her penance, her sacrifice, her soul that would never be whole again. One, two, three, ten, twenty desperate breaths and then a low shrill of pain held as a prisoner of war in her throat.
But truth was no balm from heartache, from fear, from unsympathetic loneliness.
Death is simply an interruption, not an end."
"Yes, but thinking usually precedes talking or even doing. Have you ever done either before moving forward with a plan? Or do you simply hope that good intentions will lead to a satisfactory conclusion?"
"You arrogant, self-serving human. You acted like a little boy, slinking away instead of staying by her side until the end. So afraid to die, afraid to embrace death with your chin held high and your heart free of regrets. But no, you ran away, taking Lela’s comfort, security, and love with you. Don't you dare lecture me. You have no moral standing here.”
Many a battle had been lost and wars waged over perceived insult and pride.
"Our people," Lela began, her voice low, back still to Ammon, "believe in the cyclical nature of life. We believe the cosmos puts every soul where it needs to be, even when the soul in question doesn't understand. We believe that all life is sacred, but no one soul is more important than any other. We are equals, equally chosen, equally destined, equally loved—the part no greater than the whole."
Not without pain, doubt, and heartache. Those emotions and tribulations were part of the process, the cycle of life and death. She could not spare them, their rocky journey of love and loss, guilt and forgiveness, truth and faith.
