“Are you suggesting you’ve hired a demon to entertain us and it’s sure to become all the rage, Captain?”
“What shall we do if we’re tricked out of our souls, sir?”
“You do appear a bit pale, Miss Prescott. Does your soul feel attached to your person?”
“I swear my soul is getting weaker. Can you tell? Do I look more… transparent?”
“I wonder if there’s a spirit photographer aboard. I’ve heard they can capture such things on film. My clothing isn’t becoming indecent, is it?”
What morbid creatures we were, craving danger and mystery in place of happily-ever-afters.
“Actually, I was contemplating murder.” “Not mine, I hope.”
“Though I am rather handsome in this suit. I suppose if it’s my time to go, I might as well go in style. Be sure to keep my face intact. I want you to swoon and mourn at my funeral.”
“Magic is science. It’s simply a fancier term for showing people the impossible is attainable.”
Patience was a loathsome virtue.
“You know I don’t mind when you daydream about me.”
“Might the two of you act properly for five minutes?”
“And guilty of picturing me without clothing?”
There is no greater show of power than continuing to live when you’d like nothing more than to lie down and let the world fade.
Which might prove difficult, as Dr. Arden had the welcoming personality of a slug.
“My partner in crime and debauchery,” I said, clinking our glasses together. “I am a lucky woman, indeed.”
“Truth is often compared to a blade,” I said. “I question those who marvel when it pricks.”
I hoped my expression appeared like longing and not constipation.
“Normal is overrated.” Cassie nudged me toward the bar. “Extraordinary is unforgettable.”
I’d much sooner enjoy stabbing my hand with a fork.
“Removing intestines before luncheon is all right, but clowns are where your limits end?”
“What does it say about me that I find myself even more attracted to you after that threat?”
“You’re abandoning me for sweets,” I said with a slight shake of my head. “How magnanimous indeed.”
“Don’t be jealous of pastry, my love. Its golden crust and buttery taste cannot compare to your delectable personality. Much.”
“Here I thought simply being in your presence was treat enough.”
“Be cautious with who you give your heart to. And be even more wary of those who seek to steal it.”
“Satan has decided to claw his way out of Hell and join us. I had no idea he did subpar tricks, though.”
“He’s jealous of my suit. Not everyone can get away with decadent patterns and silver fringe.”
“The incredibly handsome and talented Thomas James Dorin Cresswell, you mean.”
“I’ll play the part of the victim,” I said. “You’re a much-better murderer.”
“Not much. You may feel free to put your hands on me anytime you please.” He winked, then winced. “Though I’d prefer the touch to be a bit more gentle in the future.”
“Try not to aggravate any of them too much. A little of your charm goes a long way.”
“Well, if one is foolish enough to play with flames, they shouldn’t be surprised when they get burned.”
“Whose sword is bigger? Yours or Jian’s?”
“Swords, secrets, and stolen kisses.” His eyes flashed with delight. “You speak the language of my complicated heart, Wadsworth. I am a very lucky man.”
“How many adjectives can one use in a sentence? Mephisto might be in want of a thesaurus. Perhaps I’ll gift one to him.”
You see, you create an escape for someone else, realizing at the last minute that you’ve trapped yourself in a cage of your own design.
“Enough of all that. Is Mr. Cresswell planning on returning my signet anytime soon, or is he prancing around at night wearing it, wishing he were as handsome as me?”
But in a world where illusions were hard to distinguish from reality, it was getting harder to tell.
“If he attempts that, then I’m sure a Siren or whale will swallow him whole,” I said.
“Is that supposed to be insulting? Whatever will you comment on next; the golden flecks in my eyes? The sharpness of my jaw?”
“Ah. I understand now.” Mephistopheles’s lips twitched. “You’re a lunatic.”
“I prefer ‘unpredictable.’ It’s got a nicer ring to it.”
“Honestly, you’re both infantile. Can we please focus on the poor...

“Pour kerosene, set it aflame, and walk away when the fire is too hot for your tastes.”
“Don’t be angry you took the boring, traditional route. You could still choose differently, you know. You want to set your world on fire, I’ll give you a matchbox.”
“I find your vehemence endearing.”
“I find your lack of compassion appalling,” I said.
“She’s the muscle. I’m clearly the charm.”
“I love you, Wadsworth. No matter what or who you choose, I always will.”
