“Equal in worth, in purpose, in grace,” Athan recited. “But you share different responsibilities, different talents, different needs. A father is responsible for his own family, but a ruler is responsible for all his people. As a father must be obeyed so that he can fulfill his duties, a ruler must be obeyed as well. It is the way of things.”
He was a son. It wasn’t a title bestowed out of duty when the King really meant servant and warrior. Adopted, yes. But loved whole. Loved completely. And certainly not for any inept attempt to serve and battle.
“You are enough.” He breathed deeply. “You not only love me more than I deserve, you love me more than I need.”
