Of course the low top tax rates that had helped to create that outcome of extreme disparity were set by a Republican Congress and kept there by them. But the polemic was telling. A large part of the American Right agreed with Obama that the American Dream was in trouble, but for them, he was the personification of everything that was wrong. His defeat of Mitt Romney in 2012 only vindicated them in their belief that existing Republican politics were hopelessly inadequate.
