But, not surprisingly, the crisis produced a broad-based mood of protest that was fueled by the desire for social solidarity and national self-assertion. On the Right the beneficiary was the racist Golden Dawn, a true neofascist movement. But by far the more popular response was Syriza, the party of the radical Left, which in the May 2014 European elections easily overtook the governing party, New Democracy.
