Earlier in the year, Syriza had tried in vain to gain leverage in Europe by interesting global actors in its predicament. The United States, China and Russia had all declined. They would not meddle in Germany’s sphere of interest. Poland and the UK posed challenges to the EU status quo that were far harder to contain.
