But even in this cocoon of prosperity, German politics were not immune to stress. The weak link was the FDP, Merkel’s chosen coalition partner since 2009.6 The FDP’s probusiness, tax-cutting agenda had no more than niche appeal in Germany at the best of times. Its national sovereignist position came increasingly under pressure in the course of the eurozone crisis.
