Gas diplomacy in an age in which prices for fossil fuels were gyrating was a volatile business. But for both Moscow and Beijing, the point went beyond economics. It was about redefining the balance of power and affirming multipolarity. It would not be the incumbent hegemon that would shape the twenty-first-century order but the rising power of Asia and its allies. In so doing, Moscow and Beijing were also giving a new ending to the twentieth century.
