In the Spanish general election of December 2015, the two-party system based on the conservatives and the Socialists that had shaped the transition to democracy since General Franco’s death in 1975 imploded. With the conservatives crashing to 28 percent and the Socialists to 22 percent, they commanded the loyalty of only half the electorate.
