The State of Grace

For a split second I feel like I’m on the outside of some unspoken conversation—but then I often feel like that. I think it’s probably how it feels when you’re really fluent in a language but you’re with native speakers. I speak human as a second language, and there’s always a subtext that I miss.

When I got up this morning, there were no clean knickers left in my drawer, and I had to go and rootle about in the tumble dryer until I found some.

I just love this perfectly British sentence.

and then I’m thinking about Pretty in Pink, when Iona asks Andie, “Does he have strong lips?” and I’m wondering if Gabe’s constitute strong lips because my knees feel a bit dizzy
