Light diffracted into rainbows and flashed gray. A familiar chill ran up Nilah’s spine; she knew that gray spell—Mother’s magic.

Ranger hunkered down, then jumped through a hail of sparking spells.
Nilah’s heart skipped with the fear that Orna had been shot.
Malik lay unconscious in her arms—she must’ve taken a few hits to protect him.

“Orna!” screamed Nilah, and the monitors froze in place. She traced her glyph and slapped her palms against the med bot.
