For the last quarter century, a joint team from the American Museum of Natural History and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences has been mounting annual summer expeditions to this desolate expanse of central Asia. The fossils they have collected—which date from the Late Cretaceous, between about 84 and 66 million years ago—provide unprecedented insight into the lifestyles of dinosaurs and early birds.
