When we limit God’s mighty acts to the possible we can castigate and sometimes kill other Christians because their understanding of Christ is not exactly like ours. We can be terrified of Roman Catholics and refuse to have any statues or images in our churches. We can deny ourselves the nurture of symbol and sacrament because their potency is fearful. Sometimes when I am asked if I am a New Ager, I reply, “No, I am an Episcopalian,” understanding that Episcopalianism is as alien to my questioner as the New Age!
