The press isn’t your friend, but it isn’t your enemy either. Liberals tend to make common cause with reporters. We think that we have similar worldviews, and liberals do believe—or at least used to believe before 2016—that the media was a fundamental part of what makes democracy work. Because we like the media—in part to defend them from unfair attacks from conservatives—we are caught off guard when they turn on us like a pack of hungry hyenas.
