The hole in her heart tore wider with each passing day. She didn’t know how to stop the ache, so she soothed it with family. But even their comforting presence did little to fix what was broken.
“Perhaps they will forgive you. I remember a time when people used to go to the shrines just to be with the faeries in nature. I don't believe everything is about giving them something. Sometimes, the giving is in being there.”
She came alive when she left the brothel.
This man pushed too much, thought he knew far more than a simple woman, and she grew weary of men who thought so highly of themselves.

“I gained perspective.” “You met a woman.” Eamonn glared. “In my experience, that’s the only reason a man would change his entire outlook on life. She must be a stunning faerie to have convinced you to return home.”
A few of the dwarves stood up. “I will not allow my brother to destroy this land any further. You and your families deserve the recognition you are owed. I will place my life on the line for you as I did on the battlefield today. Stand with me, brothers and sisters of the Fae. Let me be your sword, for I will strike down any who threaten you. Let me be your shield, for I will weather you through this storm. Let me be the biting cold of winter and the blistering heat of summer, for I will cut through the forces of Fionn the Wise and bring you home!”
“By earth, I open this portal between our world and the Otherworld.”
“By air, I break the shields that separate our kind.”
“By water, I lift the veil and create the way into the Otherworld.”
“By fire, I open the portal.”
“Never take away a woman’s choice to stand by her man. Do you hear me?”
“I will always put myself as your shield. I have to protect those I cherish. And you are my heart, Sunshine.” His words dug into her ribs, wiggling their way through the icy exterior she had erected. “Then let me walk beside you and heal every wound.”
“I know better than to ignore the wisdom of women. Though I do not always agree with you, mo chroí, I will never dismiss your opinions.”
She grinned back, happiness bubbling in her chest. “The moss is comfortable.” “I wouldn’t put you anywhere else.” “The sun is warm.” “It sees you and smiles.” “You feel so familiar,” she said in wonderment and lifted a hand to touch the new crystals near his eye. “And yet, so different as well.”
“I can teach a person to fight. Not to be in an army and march in a line towards their death. Dwarves fight to stay alive. That’s how you should fight too.”
“A King encourages faeries to be who they are. He teaches the younglings to protect themselves, tells the old to pass on traditions. His role is important, for his is judge, jury, and justice. “The Queen is different. She is the gentle soul that passes through the lands, healing injuries, and breathing life into wombs. She is the softness in a world that is as hard as steel. Without that gentle mother, our people quickly descend into chaos.”

I sometimes wondered why they are so enamored with beautiful things when there is so much more out there. Knowledge is a power that can be turned against anyone. Beauty is merely a talent.”
“Anyone can be beautiful if they love themselves, but not everyone can be intelligent. Which do you want to be?”
“If I measured my worth in beauty, I would live a life full of riches and happiness. If I am valued for the knowledge I impart on the world, then I live forever.”
“I pledge my soul to you,” he growled. “My heart, my mind, my life are now yours.” Somehow, she knew she was supposed to say the words. “I pledge my soul to you, my heart, my mind, and my life are now yours.”

My poetry for you is a vow. The world may burn down around us, but nary a flame shall touch thy beloved flesh. The ocean may swallow the land, but I shall be your ship and feed you sweet air. A sword may try to cut you down, but I will bear all your wounds. I have lived a thousand years in the dark, waiting for the rays of your sunlight.”

What was she supposed to do when her ribs were cracking open, exposing her heart to the frigid expanse of her soul? She had lost everything, over and over again. And now she was alone.
“What is a queen without a king?” She licked her lips and turned into the green mist of her ancestors. “A dark, powerful creature with no man to temper her steel. You shall wield a sword as your crown, a whip as your jewels, and armor as your gown.”
“The fires of war can be fanned with the slightest of breaths.”
“No,” she shook her head. “It is living a life for others. And while I do not resent them, I wish to be selfish, to live by my own choices without affecting so many others.”
“I may bear his name, his marks, and his love, but I am not his.”
“I am weary of men. Their hands are grasping, their needs are great, and my mind no longer wishes to bend to their will.”
“I wish I had become a different person as I aged, but I did not. The woman residing inside this physical form no longer wishes for the attentions of any man. Even one I might have loved.”
