We become “interested” in the world outside of our ego in the literal meaning of interest, which comes from the Latin inter esse, i.e., “to be among” or “to be over there,” rather than to be shut in within oneself. This development of “interest” can be compared to a situation in which a person has seen and can describe a swimming pool.
