We will not solve the problems of the present with the tools of the past. As the artist and critical geographer Trevor Paglen has pointed out, the rise of artificial intelligence amplifies these concerns, because of its utter reliance on historical information as training data: ‘The past is a very racist place. And we only have data from the past to train Artificial Intelligence.’17
