As Lorenz had discovered a decade before, the only way to make sense of such numbers and preserve one’s eyesight is to create a graph. May drew a sketchy outline meant to sum up all the knowledge about the behavior of such a system at different parameters. The level of the parameter was plotted horizontally, increasing from left to right. The population was represented vertically.
