“What time is it?” He rubbed his eyes and glanced around his suddenly bright surroundings, sporting a look of confusion. I’d long opted for a dry, no-nonsense routine around him. So I answered gruffly, “Time to stop working and have supper, sir.” Given my status as the only person in the garrison he tolerated cheek from, I often went for broke.
