some Wilsonian substitute for the supranational sovereignty of the Habsburgs was needed in Central Europe. (Unfortunately their formula, a Slav-dominated Mittel Europa, had other drawbacks.) The other fatal error was simply to disregard the general tenets of Wilsonism — especially the vital caveat in the Fourth Principle against “introducing ... new elements of discord and antagonism” — when dealing with particular cases.
