These have been called “Methuselah trusts,” the most famous of which were set up by Benjamin Franklin. On his death, he gave two gifts of ₤1,000 each to the cities of Boston and Philadelphia, and he instructed the funds to be invested for 100 years before being used to sponsor apprenticeships for local children.
