“Go lead yourself into an unwinnable crusade,” I spit. “I’m not following.” Ava glares up at me from the dirt like she’s finally seeing my full evolution and hates what I’ve become. Something other than her.
“Ava,” I whisper. Her name summons a howl of sirens that shatter the stillness of the dawn. They’re so close now. “Wait for me.”
For thousands of years, societies have built walls to keep their adversaries out or their populations in. But history tells us they all eventually fall. Stone, brick, wood, concrete, barbed wire, and tamped earth cannot keep a sharp mind and a desperate determination at bay forever.
“We are the rank and file, the discontent, the Common. We are labeled Gluts, marked rebels. And we are many.” I repeat the last words as a threat. As a summons.
