“My name is Edmond Valdez,” he says, his voice beautiful and luring.
“It doesn’t have to happen yet,” he says. There’s defeat in his eyes. Agony. Failure. “Please give her a little more time.”
Slowly, he raises his hands, and he takes my mask, and one tiny movement at a time, he lifts it from my face. My lips fall open slightly, every bit of me waiting. Poised. “Finally,” he breathes. “After all this time.”
“I present Logan Pierce, daughter of Alivia Conrath. Descendant of my grandsons, Dorian and Malachi.” Another reaction of awe and shock. My grandsons? What…what does that even mean?
“It has been a very, very long time since I have met anyone like you, Logan,” he breathes. His thumb brushes over the center of my wrist. “Someone who does not recoil when in my presence. Someone who dares speak their mind.”

Human at birth, rising from his first death as a vampire.”

red eyes stares us down. “I was going to intervene,” a low, calm but dangerous voice says. And my pulse skyrockets. “I was going to offer to pay her debt off and let you go your own way.” One step, Cyrus enters the alleyway. “But then you had to go and put your hands on her. And touching my things is an unforgiveable sin.”
“Gentiana,” he says and I can feel him studying me. “They commonly grow at home in Austria. I thought maybe you would appreciate them.” I smile, my eyes rising to meet Cyrus’. “They’re absolutely beautiful.
Cyrus says with absolute confidence. “For if you hold her too close,
she will only want to roam.”
