“It has been a very, very long time since I have met anyone like you, Logan,” he breathes. His thumb brushes over the center of my wrist. “Someone who does not recoil when in my presence. Someone who dares speak their mind.” He raises my hand, and brings
“I told you that I would give you four weeks to finish your human life,” he says, brushing his cheek along my skin. “I told you I am a man of my word.” Every one of his words sounds pained, full of absolute longing. “But Logan, please, I beg of you. Please do not make me wait.”
“I am so tired of waiting,”
“Ravishing doesn’t quite describe the way you look, Logan,”
“I was going to intervene,” a low, calm but dangerous voice says. And my pulse skyrockets. “I was going to offer to pay her debt off and let you go your own way.” One step, Cyrus enters the alleyway.
“But then you had to go and put your hands on her. And touching my things is an unforgiveable sin.”
“This world is full of all kinds of predators. I would know since I made the most powerful ones. But you…” he trails off, his lip curling in a sneer. “You are the worst kind.”
“He’ll never, ever bother you again. Whatever debt you owed him, you’ll never have to worry about it again.”
“I believe it has at times been customary to bring flowers to the woman you are madly in love with,”
“You deserve them, Logan. Don’t deny me something I wanted to do.”
“Let’s just say she was more than a little shocked to hear I was ‘moving in’ with you. I’ve never…”
“I’ve never had a serious relationship. Or any kind of relationship. So to her, this seems like a really, really big deal.”
“Have you ever been in love, Logan?”
“I’ve never found a man who didn’t find me too…salty,” I answer honestly. “So, no.”
“Make a woman feel like the most important part of your world, but never forget that she is still her own person,” Cyrus says with absolute confidence. “For if you hold her too close, she will only want to roam.”
“I want you to be my wife!” Cyrus bellows, his eyes flaring brilliant. He
swings an arm through the air with an exclamation. “I want to finally not be alone. I want to finally, finally be together once more.”
“It means,” he says, “that I have never, ever kissed another woman besides my wife.” He takes a step forward, and then another. “It means, that for 286 years, I have been alone. It means, that for 286 years, I have searched for her.”
“It means, that for the past twenty-seven days, I have prayed that you will be her.”
“I loved my wife, more than anything in this world,” he says. “But I did not realize it until after I achieved immortality. I did not realize it until after I took her free will and turned her against her choice.”
“I cursed myself then, not only with the craving of blood,” he says. “But I cursed myself to lose that which I valued most.” He takes one deep, ragged breath. “After only eighty-nine years of immortality together, my wife grew sick. She was frail. There wasn’t enough blood in the world to sate her thirst. And after only weeks of this, she died.”
“Over and over and over again, my wife would be reborn somewhere in the Royal bloodline. Around the globe. Always with a different face. Always awakening to remembrance after Resurrecting. And she would always die again and again in my arms.”
“I realized it last night, and just now, my heart told me the truth,” I whisper as it fractures. “I wanted you to love me for me. And for you to stop looking for someone else whenever you look in my eyes.”
“Love wrecks us. And even if you do go your separate ways, it doesn’t mean that love ends. Maybe it’s just easier if you still love them, and be happy for what might come for them in the future. And tell yourself that when the time is right, that you’re allowed to be happy again.”
“I don’t know exactly what’s going on. You’ve kind of been keeping me in the dark when it comes to your first time love life.” We both chuckle at that. “But I know when you love someone, you fight for them. Even if there’s a chance you might not win. You’re a fighter, Lo. So go fight.”
