What did David and Paul share that gave them both this confidence? They both knew Jesus, who proclaimed, “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11). David speaks of being strengthened by the Shepherd’s rod and staff; Paul speaks of being strengthened by Christ. It’s the same experience. And Paul was convinced that it was an experience that everyone can know. Out of that conviction he could promise the Philippians: “My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (4:19).
