In that moment and for that audience, the story of the Qurʾanic prophet was no longer a tale from a faraway past, depicted in a foreign language of an old and exotic scripture, or in a seemingly neutral translation by a foreign Muslim authority in a printed book that rested somewhere on the top shelf in their homes and houses of worship. The sound of their response signaled a deep, felt-in-the-bones connection between the Qurʾan and who they were. It embodied the resonance between their collective memory and their Qurʾan.
