Further confirming the importance of gut microbial diversity for gut health is the observation that the colon inflammation can be rapidly cured by reestablishing the compromised architecture of the gut microbiome. The only currently available way to restore gut microbial diversity in these patients is the transfer of an intact microbiota from the feces of a healthy donor into the gut of the affected patient. This treatment, so-called fecal microbial transplantation, results in an almost miraculous reconstitution of the patient’s own microbial composition.
