Thrawn had given his oath of loyalty to the Empire. But that loyalty had never been fully tested. Vader stood beside Palpatine as the Sith Master’s apprentice. But his previous life among the Jedi could not simply be ignored nor casually dismissed.
He smiled thinly. Time for Thrawn to face his future. Time for Vader to face his past.
Kimmund was the head of the First Legion, the elite unit that Lord Vader had drawn from the equally renowned 501st to serve as his personal stormtrooper force.
And with Commander Eli Vanto’s unexplained disappearance from the Seventh Fleet still fueling the rumor mill, Faro was no longer sure where her future lay.
“The past is the past,” Vader said. “The present and future are all that matter.”
“Our myths of the Republic speak of two groups of beings with such powers: the Jedi, and the Sith. But the Sith are reputed to be clever and capable warriors.
“Consider yourself lucky it was just a general-service droid instead of a full-blown assassin,” Anakin said grimly. “They’re a lot nastier.”
“I’ve been poking around this area, and I believe I’ve uncovered a Separatist factory on Mokivj.”
Vader would need his armor cleaned in more time-consuming detail. Fortunately, he had another full set in his quarters that he could wear while the Chimaera’s techs restored this one.
And everyone in the First Legion knew what happened when Lord Vader wasn’t happy.
Kalikori of the Twi’leks.
“Grysks are a species living somewhere in the Unknown Regions,”
“But many myths are rooted in fact.
“When I was first brought before the Emperor,” Thrawn said at last, his voice calm, “I warned him there were many dangers waiting to strike from the Unknown Regions. He took me at my word.
The grand admiral was smart and subtle, but never used his brilliance to show up or humiliate anyone. He demanded results, but never perfection, and had amazing stores of patience for those who were truly working to their fullest ability. He cared about his people, to the point of standing up for them even against the disapproval of powerful men like Lord Vader.
There was nothing Thrawn valued more than information and knowledge.
The Rule of Two was all that had saved the Republic’s Sith from the level of internal warfare that could have brought about total self-destruction. Was there an echo of that same warfare going on even now on the Chiss worlds?
“The Cheunh word is ozyly-esehembo,” Thrawn said. “In Basic, it translates to ‘sky-walker.’ ” Another small smile. “You can imagine my momentary confusion when I first encountered General Anakin Skywalker.”
No matter what danger might be threatening, despite being in the middle of chaos, R2-D2 just kept on doing what he had to. It was a lesson a lot of people she knew could benefit from.
