Crosby and Textor labelled Hammond ‘a fucking cheese dick’ and told Hill and Timothy, ‘We need to keep him away from everything from now on.’ A colleague recalled, ‘I’d never really heard “cheese dick” until that point.’ But the phrase caught life, and soon Hill was using it about Hammond too.

At an event on 29 May, the prime minister took a question from Quentin Letts, the waspish sketchwriter for the Daily Mail: ‘I don’t mean to be rude, but you seem to be a bit of a glumbucket. Are you enjoying the campaign?’ Her face like thunder, May visibly flinched and gave a stock answer.
